India recorded by far the fastest ever rise in weekly Covid-19 cases with a six-fold increase in infections in the week ending Sunday, as the Omicron-fuelled third wave of the pandemic accelerated across the country. India reported more than 7.8 lakh cases during the week (January 3-9), more than six times higher than last week’s tally of nearly 1.3 lakh.
